Working in partnership with the team at Fix & Fogg we planned, styled and executed a lifestyle shoot that celebrated their range of products and the people that make it possible.
When planning lifestyle shoots we always aim to create as much usable and versatile content as possible to give our clients value. These lifestyle images will be used for social media, website, PR, advertising and much more.
Flora Waycott is a talented designer and illustrator based in Wellington. She is half British and half Japanese, loves greenery and copious amounts of tea.
Her charming and whimsical illustrations evoke emotions and connections, with her delicate style influenced by a childhood spent in Japan. Flora is represented internationally by Lilla Rogers, with her work appearing in magazines and books, children's apparel, greetings cards, stickers and other products as well as featuring on numerous international blogs.
Flora approached PIVOT with a task to create a collection of portraits that could be used for her website, editorial use and to accompany illustrative award submissions.
We photographed product shots in the studio for New Zealand’s most trusted brand, Whittakers. In partnership with another iconic New Zealand brand, Tip Top, they released their new ice cream flavours - Butterscotch Popcorn and Roasted Almond. Both are divine!

Hà Giang is an otherworldly mountainous region in the far-north of Vietnam. It is the final frontier. Closed to foreigners for a long time we are now able to experience firsthand the incredible lunar-like landscape of limestone pinnacles and granite outcrops of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark. We spent a blissful week motorbiking this rugged montane topography. The carved roads were windy and steep as we climbed around edges of precipitous mountain passes and descended down into deep valleys. The sheer scale of this landscape can’t be captured in a single or any amount of photographs. There is so much detail arranged beautifully across this imposing panorama. We felt the need to stop every minute to take it in. To shut off the engine and allow the vastness to engulf us.
There are a staggering variety of the hill tribes throughout Hà Giang and they are not ‘Vietnamese’. They are ethnically different and vary even from village to village. These include the H'Mông, Tày, Dao, Nùng, and Lô Lô. Apparently 90% of Hà Giang’s population are from 22 ethnic minorities, including 2 of the most rare ethnic groups in the world, with less than 400 living members. The majority of these villagers live in, well, villages. Not French-country-town-villages. Proper blast-from-the-past fully self-sufficient subsistence-living villages. They farm, they harvest, they forage. Their village is surrounding by stone walls to keep the mountain cats out. And it’s hard living. We saw children as young as five carrying crops twice their size on their backs and pre-teen girls toiling the unyielding land in the baking midday heat. But despite their physically tiresome lives the men, women and children were full of joy and life.
The thing we noticed is that the people of the mountains of Hà Giang are just getting on with their life. There was next to no tourism infrastructure and nobody approached you to sell anything. It is like witnessing the inner workings of a different era, a different age in fact. It’s one of the last untouched regions of Southeast Asia and we are so thankful we experienced it before the tourism industry catches on and changes everything.
It was an absolute privilege to have our travels through Hà Giang featured in Issue 69 of Frankie Magazine.
Munro was born when Caroline Munro patch-worked bits of colour together from her auntie’s factory floor into one-off jock and merino hoody creations. Good old fashioned Kiwi ingenuity prevailed and funnily enough, people liked it so she made more!
Munro exist to create a more colourful and comfortable world. This lifestyle shoot reflects Munro’s exuberant approach to life – a willingness to laugh a little, even if that’s at yourself!
The team handled everything from location scouting to shotlists to talent wrangling to set styling. And we had a lot of fun along the way!
PIVOT has been lucky enough to shoot portraits and documentary series for Frankie Magazine since 2012. One such commission came in the form of photographing Gosia Piatek - founder, owner and manager of world-renowned Kowtow clothing.
Gosia has an interesting background. Born in Poland, her family fled the country in 1985 and headed for Italy where they spent two years in a refugee camp. Now as the creative director of her own clothing label she runs a staff of ten with stockists here in Wellington and abroad – Scandinavia being one of the label’s largest markets. The brand’s minimalist aesthete appeals to a diverse range of people whom she cites are anywhere between the ages of seventeen to seventy. And testament to where the brand sits on the international fashion frontier, Kowtow recently been picked up by an agent in New York, and now supply out of warehouses in the US and Belgium.
From small beginnings, especially as someone who had no formal training in the fashion industry, she says it was her hunger and ‘young, delusional self’ that got her through the late nights and hard work of what is essentially an incredibly stressful industry.

Whittaker’s Assortments are the perfect gift to give, and gift to get! Our hero shot was used in a Christmas campaign to encourage chocolate lovers to give and get a little piece of everyday luxury. As commercial photographers we love the opportunity to shoot product campaigns in the studio, especially for one of New Zealand’s most trusted brands.

It was a pleasure to return to Bell & Co - Wellington’s leading boutique employment and family law firm - to photograph new and old staff members. PIVOT provide bespoke staff portraits that steer clear of stuffy, serious corporate headshots. We create portraits to communicate your character.

The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s leading medical research institute focused on finding cures for cancer, asthma and allergy, multiple sclerosis and infectious disease. Dr Olivier Gasser, Dr Tiffany Bouchery and Dr Alexander Smith are based at this world-renowned medical facility here in Wellington and between then they aim to re-train our immune systems to fight off cancer and other diseases through the use of vaccines.
PIVOT were commissioned by Capital Magazine to step inside the aseptic otherworld of these talented scientists to document the clinical spaces they inhabit, the tools of the trade and something of the incredibly complex process that is undertaken to break ground in their field.
Fix & Fogg have taken the New Zealand peanut butter market by storm. Constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries, they have started shipping their nutty goodness to America. Using professional studio lighting PIVOT shot their US range and clear-cut the images for design use in Photoshop.
There’s nothing but fruit in here. Annies only ever make food you trust. They use honest and wholesome ingredients so you can feel good about what you’re eating. They recently rebranded, innovating a little, adjusting Annies to offer more convenient on-the-go options in a new, natural look. PIVOT photographed their new products in the studio for WERK.
We photographed Wellington fashion boutique, ENA, as part of a large project for Wellington Regional Development Agency (WREDA) to showcase the best Wellington has to offer - across fashion, hospitality, craft beer and so much more!
We have photographed Flora Waycott on a number of occasions for publications and her own personal use. It's always a delight to work collaboratively with an artist where trust is foundational. We proposed to Flora shooting this essay with medium format film; allowing the rich greens and browns of the forest canopy and floor to take on a unique, ethereal quality. Golden late-afternoon light streamed through the leaves overhead on the stillest of days. Dreamy.
Trade School Kitchen is a social enterprise cafe and a key part of the Trade School Industries Trust. This cafe is their first commercial venture, where they aim to build a thriving business, be a place of manaakitanga to the Naenae community, and to provide dignified employment to formerly incarcerated women.
Trade School Industries have a 3-year contract with the Department of Corrections to run barista training programmes within Arohata Women’s Prison. They provide an 8-week programme catered to no more than 3 women at a time within a therapeutic environment.
They do this because they believe that trust and support need to be formed from within to make reintegrating a little less daunting and the community a little more familiar.
Trade School Kitchen is based in the heart of Naenae surrounded by supportive community groups in a thriving Lower Hutt residential centre. Go visit them for a flash coffee and a darn good piece of cake on the corner of Hillary Court and Everest Ave!

They don't use any added preservatives or msg. When you cook with Taste Lao it's as if we've invited you over to eat in their home.

Now you can find Taste Lao products in 11 locations across the North Island!
PIVOT were called upon by the team at Taste Lao to craft engaging product photography that embodied the fresh, flavoursome and aromatic pastes they create. Surrounded by copious amounts of lush herbs and spices that are contained in their products, these product shots really came to life!
Elisha of Nisa Women shot in the studio for Frankie Magazine. The team at Nisa deservedly won the community category for Frankie's Good Stuff Awards for their amazing underwear label that aims to help refugee women from the bottom up. Their underwear is lovingly sewn by women from refugee backgrounds in a sunny studio in Wellington, New Zealand.

Rembrandt Menswear and Armstrong Motor Group are at the top of their respective games. It was only natural that they would partner to provide the best in tailoring and automotive technology to their clients. Customers who purchase new vehicles from Armstrong Prestige now receive a made-to-measure custom suit experience with Rembrandt.
We photographed these images to promote the unique partnership.
New Zealand Tenor Jonathan Abernethy has established himself as a vibrant and upcoming operatic artist, his most recent accolades being named a HSBC 2015 Festival d’Aix-en-Provence Laureate and winner of the Australian Opera Awards. As a regular artist with Opera Australia, Jonathan has made important debuts on the Sydney Opera House stage including the roles of Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de Perles), Tamino (The Magic Flute) and Ferrando (Così fan tutte).

Jonathan continues to have close mentoring and support from Dame Kiri te Kanawa and the Kiri te Kanawa Foundation.
PIVOT had the pleasure of photographing Jonathan in the studio to provide strong portraits that will accompany performance programmes, press releases and publicity collateral. We sought to present Jonathan as professional and compelling, yet approachable.
Community is easy to talk about, harder to pin down, and harder still to build. In a modern world filled with consumer options and competing life experience we simultaneously long for and resist opening our lives to others. Community has been an intangible but constantly present feature of human life across cultures and time periods, but it requires longevity, localism, sacrifice, kindness, and generosity—habits of heart we are beginning to feel the lack of.
Volume 04 of Flint & Steel magazine aims to look at what community is, and what is in the soil where it grows. What does community offer to us? What are the conditions of place, time, and purpose that community requires in order to grow and survive?
PIVOT had the pleasure of photographing a selection of New Zealand Members of Parliament at the Beehive and House of Representatives, as they spoke about what community meant to them. Those photographed were:
* Carmel Sepuloni: Labour MP (first elected MP of Tongan descent)
* James Shaw: Green Party MP and Co-Leader
* Marama Fox: Maori Party MP and Co-Leader
* Melissa Lee: National Party MP of Korean descent
Munro is passionate about sustainability and ethically made essentials, and it goes without saying that comfort is top of the list too. In conjunction with their extravagant and colourful range, they have developed an organics range of underwear that features an earthy colour palette and is made from extra soft, organic cotton.
PIVOT photographed Helena in the studio for Munro’s lookbook; embodying the simple, humble and elegant side of their brand.
Fix & Fogg are peanut butter mad. They're artisan producers based in Wellington and believe in keeping things pure and simple by letting the core ingredients shine. In their opinion the production of food should be transparent, hands-on and done with the utmost care and attention.
In addition to their staple smooth and crunchy butters they had a brainwave: dark chocolate peanut butter. Why not? Everyone loves dark chocolate, everyone loves peanut butter. Applying their principles of utilising only the best ingredients they created a product that is deep, rich and unfairly moreish - made with single origin Ghanaian chocolate and blended with their Super Crunchy peanut butter.
PIVOT supplied Fix & Fogg with a collection of creative product shots to get those taste buds craving and mouths salivating. Needless to say, their creation went viral. With thousands of likes, comments and shares they struggled to keep up with local and national demand. Dark chocolate peanut butter is now a staple in the Fix & Fogg culinary offering - the crowd has spoken, it's here to stay.
Sally Eagle is a New Zealand bridal designer. She creates beautiful wedding dresses and romantic bridal gowns from her Wellington bridal boutique. We photographed her 2019-20 collection - Moonstone - in the studio.
In partnership with a handful of Wellington’s top establishments, Six Barrel Soda Co created a range of delectable soda cocktails for punters to enjoy across the month.
Last year we photographed a very special Mercedes-Benz E-Class on loan from Mercedes-Benz Australia. Shot around Wellington's iconic streets, the images were used for media and events related to new autonomous driving technology and safety features. Needless to say, it drove like a dream 👌🏁
Orbit specialise in tailor-made corporate travel. Knowing that every organisation is different, instead of offering one package and hoping it fits, they start by getting to know your business. They find out what’s working and what’s not. They think about how we can use their position as one of New Zealand’s leading travel management companies to give you a competitive edge – and then they design their solutions around you.
In order to communicate this grand vision Orbit Travel called upon the endlessly creative team at Weekdays Studio to develop a comprehensive re-brand from the ground up. PIVOT was then commissioned by Weekdays to develop and shoot a collection of hero shots for nationwide use and a secondary library of stock imagery for Orbit's website.
Wellington-based acclaimed fashion label, twenty-seven names, imagine collections that are overtly sentimental and hopelessly romantic, creating a wearable but unique sensibility. Their clothes are made for everyday woman. Rach and Anj, the label's co-founders have taken this commonfolk approach to new heights when they commissioned PIVOT to create portraits of their friends and family adorned in their newest collection.
Shooting for Frankie Magazine is always a treat and an honour. With close to half-a-million readers internationally Frankie are a big deal when it comes to all things lifestyle, fashion, travel and people starting nifty businesses. We photographed Wellington local, Pera Barrett, for Issue 77 of Frankie. Location: Milk Crate.
Fix & Fogg love to push the boundaries when it comes to peanut butter. They’re always dreaming up new flavour combinations and ways to pack more healthy goodness into their spreads. They might have concocted perfect, wholesome goodness with Everything Butter - a mix of nuts and seeds that would keep your nutritionist (and tastebuds!) happy. We shot the hero image in all it’s vibrant glory!
"My styling is always thoughtful and each element must have purpose and be the best possible option."
Yvette Edwards is known for her inventive floral designs, creative art direction and bringing a unique aspect to styling photographic shoots, weddings and events for her clients. Yvette has a strong artistic aesthetic with an eye for quality. For her floral work she is enthusiastic about using local, seasonal flowers from carefully researched growers and hand-made or crafted artisan products from around the world.
Yvette believes it is important that visual styling has a balance between being captivating and forward thinking as well as achieving its purpose to connect with the target audience and inspire them.
PIVOT was commissioned by Yvette to help craft and shoot styled flatlays that would become key visual elements on her brand new website created by local legends Inject Design. Each flatlay embodied elements of the section of the website in which it would reside; weddings, projects, styling, events. PIVOT used a studio environment to provide consistent and beautiful lighting.
Fix & Fogg is all about adventure. Roman and Andrea, the husband-and-wife brains behind the peanut butter goodness, were once high-flying commercial lawyers. But then they decided that they would take their wee family on a risky journey to become the best artisan peanut butters producers in the whole darn world! In fact, their name was inspired by two characters from an adventure novel, Around the World in Eighty Days; Phileas Fogg and Detective Fix.
Two years into their wild adventure Fix & Fogg has fast made a name for themselves in New Zealand and beyond. They have extended beyond their staple smooth and super crunchy butters to experiment with Smoke & Fire (Manuka smoke, paprika and cayenne pepper) and Dark Chocolate varieties. PIVOT was commissioned by Fix & Fogg to provide a collection of images that captured the essence of adventure, friends and the outdoors.
Holly McQuillan is a Senior Lecturer of Fashion Design at Massey University. She is a designer, maker, writer and facilitator, who works primarily in the field of sustainable design practice. Her work often explores risk taking in the context of fashion design as a way of discovering new ways of viewing and creating the world we live in.
PIVOT was commissioned by Frankie Magazine to photograph Holly to sit alongside a compelling story detailing her recent role leading the Make/Use team. This project explores what might occur if we consider not only the aesthetic of the garments we wear, but also the way we use them and the waste we create when we make them.
This ongoing research-through-design project questions conventions of the clothing industry in relation to knowledge-keeping, production practices and material use. Through developing open-source, user-modifiable, zero waste designs, Make/Use aims to empower users of clothing, and challenges them to question the relationships they have with their present and future garments.
In short, the fashion and textile industry is the second largest generator of pollution and waste in the world. Make/Use attempts to address waste generation at three stages in the garment life cycle - production, retail, and (dis)use.
Make/Use and Holly McQuillan aim to turn passive consumers into active, informed and emotionally engaged makers and users - ensuring that the industry and our natural environments are clean and sustainable.
There’s nothing but fruit in here. Annies only ever make food you trust. They use honest and wholesome ingredients so you can feel good about what you’re eating. They recently rebranded, innovating a little, adjusting Annies to offer more convenient on-the-go options in a new, natural look. PIVOT created these nifty GIFs of Annie’s new products in the studio for WERK.
Local legends and industry heroes Fix & Fogg have been a client of PIVOT for a number of years now. We have worked together on campaigns, advertising imagery, food styling and creating a cohesive social media presence through engaging visual imagery. Fix & Fogg isn't just about making peanut butter. They delight in inspiring and empowering lovers of peanut butter to use their legume-y goodness in creative and nutritious ways.
Automated driving technology is making leaps and bounds with companies such as Mercedes-Benz at the forefront of developing its technology. Mercedes-Benz started the Intelligent World Drive to adapt more highly automated driving functions to national traffic and user practices. The aim is to gather global insights into real-life traffic conditions for the advancement of the technologies.
PIVOT had the pleasure of photographing an automated vehicle based off the S-Class saloon around Wellington’s iconic landmarks such as the Beehive, Te Papa and Oriental Bay.
PIVOT has been shooting street style portraits throughout New Zealand for the last four years. Commissioned by Stuff.co.nz to monthly provide a curated selection of images - a chronicle of unique pieces, latest trends and cohesive expressions - PIVOT can be found pacing the streets of Wellington-and-beyond in search of consummate elegance or something a little different.
Simon Harrison is part owner of Cameron Harrison, a small goods manufacturer with stores in the affluent Wellington suburbs of Ngaio and Kelburn. It's always busy and business is steady. Overall, beef is the bigger seller but during the summer months they make thousands of sausages - 5,000 a week, or 80,000 total sausages made by hand. Independent butchery provides opportunities for those still in the game to grow. People are sick to death of poor quality meat and zero customer service. Butcheries that understand this do well. It's not always about price it's about value. The best, surprisingly, doesn't have to cost more.
Cupid's not stupid! He recommends Assortments. Contracted by WERK Agency for MBM, PIVOT shot this product concept in the studio for Whittaker’s Valentine’s Day advertising campaign.

High production values and beautiful paper stock – combined with a curiosity about the processes and spaces of creative people – make for a compact package that feels nice in your hands.
It was an honour for PIVOT to be asked to photograph the immensely talented Flora Waycott for this neat publication. Shot in her home workspace, this simple shoot provides a window for Extra Curricular's budding creatives into Flora's happy place.
The team at Taste Lao are passionate about bringing new Southeast Asian flavours to New Zealanders. They aim to provide an authentic Lao experience that you can recreate in your home by using the freshest New Zealand grown produce to make their paste and marinades.

PIVOT were commissioned to take mouth-watering food photography for this growing Wellington business. Lucky for us, we even got to eat the sumptuous feast afterwards!
Flick Electric Co. are the new kids on the electricity block. They're not owned by one of the big gentailers, but by a group of locals who think consumers should be getting a fairer deal.
They believe power prices should be honest and transparent, which is why every bill you receive from them will show you exactly who has charged you what to get the power to your place.
And using their custom technologies they’ll work with you in unprecedented ways to help you control your power purchase.
Flick are changing the power game and are unsettling a behemoth industry. This is David vs. Goliath game and Flick has already launched that tiny little peddle - it's hurtling through the air about to make the knockout blow.
PIVOT was commissioned by Flick to freshen up their image collection of key management personnel. Shooting in their light-filled minimalistic offices in the heart of Wellington City we shot fresh, clean images that allowed the fun, warm personalities of the team to shine through.
McLaren Associates are one of New Zealand's most trusted bespoke HR and recruitment service firms. Based in Wellington, within the cradle of power, McLaren Associates work across a broad range of industry sectors and role specialisations; recruiting positions from graduate level through to Chief Executive and Board appointments.
Kirsty and the team at McLaren Associates called on PIVOT to craft vibrant, engaging and strong individual staff headshots and team portraits. Their line of business is serious but they don't take themselves too seriously. The staff portraits needed to reflect this; to communicate strength, knowledge and professionalism while also conveying approachability.
PIVOT can photograph quality corporate headshots, staff portraits and team photos throughout the Wellington region and across New Zealand.
Stepping into other people's worlds is part of our job. Quite literally, a lot of the time, we step into homes that offer a rare glimpse into the private lives of others. Having been commissioned by Capital Magazine, we were invited into the surprisingly austere abode of Sir John Todd - the patriarch of the family-owned billion dollar Todd Corporation. Unostentatious and refined, the value of this Oriental Bay property was marked most significantly by the array of unique art pieces. At the sprightly age of 87, Sir John was most welcoming and even ventured out to visit the local dairy. The humble nature of Sir John's expression of wealth makes sense given that he was quoted as saying "the rich are morally responsible for helping others" and his family put their money where their mouth is, having established the philanthropic Todd Foundation in 1972.
It's true, we live in the future!
Dental implants, have you heard of them? They offer the most durable and least-damaging method of replacing teeth. Implants are essentially artificial tooth roots, placed in the jaw bone, and then used to support new teeth. Implants are made of titanium, and the body likes titanium. Bone heals directly against the implant surface, locking it into place so it integrates as a part of you.
At Wellington Dental Implants the combined expertise of Andrew and Gerry provides a preeminent specialist service. Gerry has gained vast experience in the surgical side of the treatment, and has become one of the ‘go-to’ specialists for complex implant procedures in New Zealand. Likewise, Andrew has restored thousands of implants over the past twenty years, overseeing the planning and construction of this aspect of implant treatment.
PIVOT was called in to photograph one of Wellington Dental Implant's very happy customers alongside a testimonial video that was being produced by Firetale.

Almond Butter perfection! Fix & Fogg wanted to make the most nutritious and delicious nut butter. Period. They use dry-roasted Almonds from Australia and a pinch of Marlborough sea salt. That’s it. No additives, no nothing, just pure almond-y goodness. Fix & Fogg Almond Butter is flecked with steel-cut crunchy chunks of almond for the perfect texture. They also turned up the dial to get a deep, dark roast that brings out the full flavour of these awesome nuts.
It was just as much a pleasure for PIVOT to photograph this almond butter as it was to eat it. Yum!
Matt Warner, Matt Stevens and Matthew Kristofski are the three magnificent Matts of ParrotDog.
No one knows why it was called a ParrotDog; but a ParrotDog has always been what it is. Beginning at the beginning; there were two characters named Matt who were just really into nice beer. They got to homebrewing out of the basement of their dingy Aro Valley flat and it was surprising – they could produce a fairly drinkable beverage.
On a student budget, and after joining forces to share costs, they started developing what would become the first commercial ParrotDog beer recipe – an India Pale Ale.
Adding another man named Matt to the mix, a contract brew went down in Taranaki and long story short; the report was not good, too bitter – they were told to dump it.
Legend to the contrary, BitterBitch turned out to be a hit. And there you have it. Stick to your guns. Make what you love.
PIVOT were called into action by Frankie Magazine to photograph the Matts. Utilising an empty industrial space with liberal helpings of natural light we shot these casual lads, well, casually. We don't think they'd know how to do it any other way.
Shooting for Frankie Magazine is always a treat and an honour. With close to half-a-million readers internationally Frankie are a big deal when it comes to all things lifestyle, fashion, travel and people starting nifty businesses. Fix & Fogg have a pretty neat story regarding their origins that you can read in Issue 62, Nov 2014.
PIVOT was commissioned to photograph the lifestyle images for Unna Burch's (of The Forest Cantina) debut cookbook "My Garden Kitchen". The title "My Garden Kitchen" ties into her cooking the produce from her backyard: vegetables from her organic gardens, multi-coloured eggs from her heritage breed hens and fresh honey from her hives. All of these ingredients are just a few steps from her kitchen which she gathers and uses daily in her recipes. As a cook and a food lover, Unna says that it's such a blessing to have this connection to where her food comes from.
"Easy weekdays and slow-food weekends" summarises Unna's cooking style. During the week she makes quick and easy meals and at the weekend she plans more elaborate dishes - things that take time and attention.

PIVOT was commissioned to shoot a few lifestyle product images for Six Barrel Soda Co.'s new revitalising beverage, Lemon Honey Ginger. Shot simply, focusing on the drink's main ingredients, the image are fresh and sweet (just like the drink).
Rachel Easting and Anjali Stewart met at primary school. Since then Rachel taught Anjali an appreciation for Manet, Picasso, and Kruger, while in turn Anjali taught Rachel an appreciation for Outkast, Lauryn Hill, and Mobb Deep. After studying art and fashion respectively the pair began working on small scale projects before launching their brand ‘twenty-seven names’. The label name is a homage to the list of 27 people who helped to get their label off the ground. Each collection is somehow overtly sentimental and hopelessly romantic, creating a wearable but unique sensibility.
